Sky Ticker for websites that publish RSS news feeds.
Launched in December 2008, Sky Ticker is one of the latest generation of RSS Feed Readers to become available for free download. Most importantly Sky Ticker really emphasises feeds that contain photos. This page is intended to allow you to get the most out of traffic generating opportunities from Sky Ticker.
Adding Sky Ticker to your list of Feed Readers
If you publish RSS feeds, you’ll probably also host a page that advises visitors where they can download a Feed Reader. Please add Sky Ticker to your list and link to http://skyticker.sky.com where users will be able to download a copy for free.
If you categorise feed readers, please place Sky Ticker in the Desktop category and list it as being Windows and Mac compatible. If you publish photos within your feeds, then we’d recommend adding Sky Ticker near the top of your list!
Display your pictures to Sky Ticker users
If you include pictures in your RSS feed you can optimise how they are viewed from Sky Ticker by using square photos. Landscape photos are supported within certain limits (by cropping), although if the aspect ratio is too big then the photo cannot be supported and will not appear at all. More details are contained in our free guide.
Measure Sky Ticker visitor traffic generated from your RSS Feeds.
If you want to figure out what priority to assign to publishing RSS feeds, we can help you measure: -
- What percentage of traffic arriving at your website came directly from a story on Sky Ticker by clicking “View Article”,
- What percentage came via the integrated “Email a friend” feature
Referrals from Sky Ticker come with a Hitbox compatible tag added at the end of your URL. Although these are designed to work with Hitbox you may be able to use them with other analytics packages. More details are contained on our free guide.
Sky Ticker sometimes loads a whole web page in the popup
If an RSS story fed from your website has no description or content, just a link, Sky Ticker loads the page at the target of the link (instead of just showing an empty popup). This can take quite a while because Sky Ticker has to wait for the whole page to load before it knows how big to make the bubble.
